Timpview’s girls tennis team has been on fire this season with a strong 9-1 record, their only loss coming in the Ashton Invitational tournament to Green Canyon. Head Coach Nate Warner says he feels the season is “going very good, very happy where we’re at. We’re undefeated in our league, and our league’s pretty strong.”
This sentiment is echoed by the team. Jane Miller says, “We’re pretty strong this year, we have good chemistry, and we’re excited to see what the season holds.” Jojo Boots adds, “The team is working really hard… state is on Jojo Boots’ birthday, so we should all go out and support!” Why she referred to herself in the third person, nobody knows.
The girls are tough competitors but also very good friends. Brinley Gardner notes the team’s “good spirit, good team chemistry… Go T-Birds!” Boots also explains, “We just had a team dinner, which was a bonding activity, and I think we’re all really good friends.”
Looking ahead to the state tournament, which will feature tougher competition than their region, Coach Warner prefers to stay focused on the present. “Our schedule helps us prepare for state more than anything because we’re playing tough competition,” he says. He also adds, “Every match you play is preparation for state… our goal is to get consistently better every match.”
The team is also excited about the upcoming Provo Invitational. However, Woods Cross, the 5A favorite, will also be competing, making for a challenging tournament. All the support they can get will be appreciated, so come out and cheer them on!
There were intense moments during the Spanish Fork match. When Kendall Woods was battling in a third set against Spanish Fork’s #2, Timpview supporters became very vocal. So much so that a Spanish Fork coach had to come over and ask the fans to “let it be their game.” Even though cheering is not against the rules, out of respect, the Timpview audience toned it down, which may have shifted the momentum and allowed Spanish Fork to score their lone point.
At the moment, it seems like no one can stop Timpview in their region, but the state tournament will be a different challenge. The state tournament will feature the top teams in 5A and will be played in October. The girls are optimistic because, as Collins notes, “A lot of girls from other teams have quit or graduated, so our chances are higher this year.”
Timpview’s girls tennis team has a lot to be proud of and a lot to look forward to. It will be an exciting end to the season. Here’s the lineup:
- 1st Singles: Hailey Miner
- 2nd Singles: Kendall Woods
- 3rd Singles: Addi Burt
- 1st Doubles: Jane Collins & Lizzy Bednar
- 2nd Doubles: Jane Miller & Sasha Tolman
Everyone come out and support!
