Dresses are bought, shoes are ordered, and suits are tailored as students get ready for Homecoming, the annual event steeped in tradition. But is the hype justified?
Homecoming, which originated in 1914 to celebrate the return of the football team, has evolved over the years. Today, some question whether the tradition and its cost are still relevant. Tickets for the event are priced at $15 for Timpview students. While some find this reasonable, particularly if they aren’t planning expensive day dates, others debate the value of the event.
To gather diverse opinions, two freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors, and two seniors were surveyed. Many students view Homecoming as a rite of passage, though a common sentiment among freshmen was skepticism about attending. One freshman commented, “Heck nah. I’m not going. I’m not paying fifteen bucks to go to a dance.”
Seniors reflected on their past Homecoming experiences, revealing a preference for day dates over the dance itself. Sixty percent of them opted for day dates, noting that the company they had was more memorable than the event or the date.
In summary, it seems that the value of Homecoming lies more in the people you spend it with rather than the event itself. Whether you engage in day dates with friends or attend the dance, it’s the connections and friendships that truly define the experience. So, even if you choose not to attend, surround yourself with good people. Homecoming doesn’t define you; you define Homecoming.
