I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Brianna Vera, an eleventh grader who is our nominee for the kindness feature of the week. Known for her radiant personality, friendly demeanor, and outgoing nature, Vera exemplifies the spirit of generosity that we aim to highlight.
As Vera and I walked to the interview, she greeted about 15 individuals—both friends and strangers—offering a “hi” or a wave to all of them. Afer these interactions, I noticed how each person left with a brighter smile and a spring in their step. It was clear that Vera’s presence had a genuine, uplifting effect on those around her, and I felt privileged to be acknowledging someone so deserving of recognition.
When asked if she knew what this interview was about, Vera was overwhelmed with gratitude “like I just feel so so happy. It makes ME happy to see other people happy. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and blessed. I feel like this is giving back kindness.” Vera then talked about how when kindness is given, it is spread like a wildfire. How showing kindness to everyone, and seeing that with her simple gestures of saying hi, really put into perspective how much Timpview, and the whole world needs more light and positive connections right now.
With the debate dividing students, violence breaking out at Timpview games, and a little less hope in the world, kindness and inclusion will strengthen connections that are needed to keep Timpview a place students want to participate in and a place where everyone feels welcomed. In the short time I had to discuss with Vera, the question was asked “What is something the students at Timpview could try to do to make this a more positive environment?” Vera responded with “At Timpview, I think if anyone sees anyone sitting/standing/alone, or looks sad or uncomfortable, to go say hi, compliment them or make sure that they are OK.”
As we navigate these challenging times, let’s take Vera’s words to heart. This week, make an effort to brighten someone’s day—whether by saying hi, complimenting their shoes, or simply engaging with someone new. Kindness has the power to make a meaningful difference, but it can only happen if we make an effort.
