Timpview Football deafeated the Springville Red Devils 59-24 in the second round of the state playoffs on Friday night, following a first-round bye. Timpview is ranked fourth out of 26 teams in 5A, positioned behind Roy, Bountiful, and Brighton. Despite the absence of starting quarterback senior Carson Rasmussen (#2) due to an injury, the T-Birds blew the Red Devils away.
Starting the first quarter strong, junior Jaron Pula (#5) caught a 30-yard pass for a touchdown and junior Luke Thornock (#37) successfully converted the extra point. Although they weren’t able to score a touchdown, Springville got a field goal minutes after Pula scored. However, less than ten seconds later, freshman Dennis Tua’one (#12) made a huge 90-yard run to score another touchdown for the T-Birds, followed by another successful PAT from Thornock. Springville finally scored their first touchdown with less than ten seconds left in the quarter, ending it with Timpview leading 14-10.
Timpview continued to bring the heat with a touchdown interception and good PAT just minutes into the second quarter. Another touchdown was scored minutes later by senior Zedekiah Anahu-Ambrosio (#7) and followed by another good PAT by Thornock. Springville managed to score a touchdown and successful PAT halfway through the quarter. Despite this, Timpview scored two more running touchdowns by junior Tipa Galea’i (#58) and senior Soakai Aston (#11) both with good PATs. With just seven seconds left of the half, Springville snuck in another touchdown, bringing the score up to 42-24.
The T-Birds and Red Devils struggled through the second half of the game, but Timpview was still able to put more points on the board. Junior Aisa Galea’i (#0) scored a 9-yard run during the third quarter, and Thornock ended the quarter by scoring a 20-yard field goal with seconds left, bringing up the score to 52-24. Junior Braxton Wilkerson (#26) scored the only touchdown of the last quarter, ending the game at 59-24.
This was a huge success for the football team. Timpview will face Orem next week in the quarterfinals of the tournament on 11/8. Make sure to show up and cheer on the T-Birds as they fight to be state champions for the second year in a row!
