Excitement is building at Timpview High School as the school’s football team heads to the state semi-final, set to take place Friday, Nov. 15, at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The game, scheduled for 11 a.m., has led to a major adjustment to the school day, shortening classes to 25 minutes and ending the day at 9:30 a.m. This change has had a variety of reactions among students and teachers.
The shortened schedule means that students will attend classes for only a brief period on Friday morning before being dismissed early, with buses departing the school at 9:40 a.m. for those heading to the game. For many, the chance to support the football team has brought excitement, but opinions are divided on the practicality of the short school day.
“It’s pointless,” said junior Faith Bird. “You can’t learn much in 25 minutes.” Like many students, Faith feels that the shorter classes will diminish learning time for teachers to effectively cover material.
Some, however, are thrilled by the unique schedule, viewing it as a break. “It’s amazing because there’s going to be no work,” said junior Josh Rust. “If they canceled the school day entirely, we’d have to add another day at the end of the year.” This perspective resonates with those who see the adjustment as an opportunity to support school spirit without extending the school calendar.
Teachers, too, are split on the day’s effectiveness. Mr. Chow, an English teacher, expressed frustration with the abbreviated class periods. “It’s pointless to get a sub because it’s such a short day,” he said. “And it’s also pointless because no real work will be accomplished.” Chow’s comments highlight the concerns some staff members have over lost instructional time and limited student engagement. To encourage student participation during the 25 minute class periods, Chow has installed a mandatory quiz for his students’ this Friday.
Despite differing opinions, the Timpview community is united in their support for the football team’s semi-final showdown. As students and staff make their way to Rice-Eccles Stadium on Friday morning, all eyes will be on the Timpview Thunderbirds as they battle for a spot in the state championship. We wish them luck!
