On November 11, Timpview celebrated Veterans Day with a spirited assembly. Students invited veterans they knew, whether friends or family, and the Student Government made red poppy pins to give to those who served. These poppies were a tribute to the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, symbolizing the fight and honor the men and women gave for our freedom and country.
Cannon Hadfield was given the chance to read the poem during the assembly. “It was an incredible experience,” he said during an interview. He explained that as he prepared and studied the poem and its significance, he found himself “reflecting on the sacrifices made by our veterans…and of what they have done and continue to do.” Cannon expressed his gratitude for that moment, and many are grateful for him and his willingness to go the extra mile
Emilie Watcott, Spencer Drews, Elijah Pestana, and Jaidyn Bundy spoke about veterans they knew and shared their unique and heroic stories. Each story was inspiring and shed light on what these men and women had to endure, as well as their accomplishments during each war.
Emilie Watcott had the opportunity to introduce her grandpa at the assembly, and was later asked if she had learned anything new about him while preparing her speech. Emilie responded by saying she had never known how much her grandpa’s service meant to him or how many awards he had won.
“It makes me really proud of him,” she says. She acknowledges that her grandfather went through many difficult experiences, “so I may never know the details…[but] I think he enjoyed the time he spent with his fellow soldiers.” Emilie’s grandpa thought it was very special to be recognized, and he told his granddaughter that he felt honored. Her grandpa lived an incredible life and continues to do so.
Thank you to all those who helped make this day and assembly possible! Timpview loved taking time to recognize all the veterans in our community and celebrate all they have done for us.
