Over the weekend, on December 6-7, Timpview Ballroom performed their first concert of the year titled, “Dancing Through History.” Directed by ballroom teacher Ethan Snow, and with an almost entirely new team from last year, the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams proved themselves to be just as entertaining and skilled as last year.
The opening number started at the very beginning of time as two dinosaurs walked on stage with the ‘Jurassic Park’ theme playing in the background. The show started with cavemen and Ancient Greece, and ended with COVID, a historical event that most of the audience could remember. Among many impressive numbers, the medieval themed dance featuring the main theme from ‘Game of Thrones’ stood out from the rest. The costumes were a rich red against the black of the stage, and the somber yet intense choreography enthralled the viewers.
The concert had multiple genres and moods within its performances, including comedic, tragic, lively and romantic. Many styles of dance were utilized such as swing, cha cha, tango, and waltz. Timpview Chamber Ensemble Orchestra made an appearance during the first act along with a solo from Henry James and Valentina Zambrano. The serious and solemn tone of the show shifted with the turn of the century, and the second act featured songs from the 20’s, 70’s and 90’s, including plenty of pop and boy band music.
The intro to the conclusion of the show was unexpected, as a zoom call between the Varsity team members was projected on the stage, an obvious marker for the theme to come. ‘Blinding Lights’ by the Weeknd, the number one song during 2020, played as the entire cast of the show came on stage for one last dance. Wearing dress shirts with pajama pants and masks, they danced a lighthearted interpretation of life during COVID. Timpview Ballroom’s next concert is on May 9 and 10, and is ‘Video Games’ themed.
