The annual students vs. teachers Sub-for-Santa basketball game on Monday, December 16, was a major success. This event is meant to raise money for families in need over the holidays. Each year, this event raises more money for families in need and is a highly anticipated game. One major aspect of the game is that anyone can donate money to win points for their team in the last quarter.
Tim Shumway, a senior who attended the game said that “it was surprisingly fun actually. The referees didn’t give the students any of their calls, and the girls couldn’t shoot a basket to save their lives, but shoutout to everyone who donated giving us the win over Tom Fell.” It was five dollars to add a point to whatever team you supported. After the students saw they were trailing behind the teacher’s team, they realized they needed to step up. Students were running across the court to donate so that the students could secure the win.
One student in particular, Peter Snow, donated $35 to secure the win for the students. Snow said “I did what I had to do for the win. I would do anything to beat Tom Fell.” Peter and the other students who donated deserve a big thank you. Many of the students were estatic to see the points climbing for the student team during the fourth quarter.
The students’ win wasn’t the only thing that happened that night. Government and Psychology teacher, Mr. Wheatley, got suspended not once but twice. Wheatley however, had drawn tattoos all over himself and went by the nickname, “White Chocolate”. White Chocolate was carrying the teacher team up until his lost his temper too many times and got kicked off of the court. Getting kicked off once didn’t stop him from sneaking back in to try and score a couple more points. Fisher Ross, a student who played in the game, had this to say about Wheatley’s actions, “I was upset about my performance, but playing in that atmosphere and seeing Mr. Wheatley getting kicked out twice was a highlight.” Fisher is right, it definitely was a fun night for both the students and the teachers. Another Sub-for-Santa game was successful thanks to the donations!
