Saturday, January 11th, marked the first Utah County-wide drama social, a Drama Prom, held at Timpview. This event hosted students from all different high schools in the county including students from Timpanogos, Lone Peak, Lehi, Skyridge, Salem Hills, and many more, and with over 200 attendees. Ordinarily, this wasn’t your typical school dance, this event featured musical theatre songs, pop songs, and familiar Disney classics that brought everyone together. The dance was themed One Short Day in the Emerald City, referencing the popular movie and musical Wicked. Everyone was dressed in green or pink with a few amusing costume cameos with characters from the musical. The social was hosted in the south gym which was decorated with props and set pieces that have been used in previous performances held at Timpview. Along with typical decorations, there were refreshments for all attendees and some vibrant photo booths.
So how did this all come together? Mrs. Napierski, Timpview’s Drama teacher and director, pulled many strings to make her visions come true. Considering this is Napierski’s first year at Timpview, it is clear that she has many aspirations. At first, the administration was hesitant with the idea of a drama social, but after much positive feedback from attendees, we are hopeful that we may be able to create a new tradition at Timpview and have future drama events with help from the administration.
The dance was different from any school dance I had ever been to, the energy was more eccentric, and people truly did seem to be having a good time. Unlike a typical school dance where the entire night consists of moshing and bruised feet, this social had dance circles, choreography, a DJ who guided the group in line dances, and even some performances from some of the attendees. Instead of being overly sweaty and bored, I got to experience something new.
With the Dance being a multi-school social, it was enjoyable to have the opportunity to meet new people who have similar interests as me and my friends, but if meeting new people isn’t your thing there were plenty of familiar faces to socialize with. I left the dance knowing that I had made new friendships that I hope to continue to grow.
In the end, Drama Prom was an enjoyable experience for all attendees, and Timpview’s drama department is excited for what events are to come in future years.
