This year’s Cultural Assembly, on February 13, was filled with talent and excitement. From Mexico to Belgium, these performances celebrated numerous cultures from around the world.
First to perform was a mariachi band, which featured Marcel Bowman on violin, Russell Oliphant on trumpet, and choir student-teacher Brittney Stradling. The rest was comprised of an ensemble of students, playing a variety of instruments. All were dressed in black clothing with a red accent piece, giving the feel of a professional mariachi band. The Spanish classes then followed, with the mariachi band playing along. They sung the song “Cielito Lindo.”
The French classes were up next, singing a mash-up of songs including “Le Festin” and “Les Champs-Élysées.” Many people added a fun pop of clothing, dressed in chef outfits, berets, and colorful scarves.
The following acts featured dances from around the world, from the People of the Pacific to the K-POP dance club and everything in between. Maria Mataeki and the Latinos in Action had beautiful and vibrant clothing, adding a fun splash of color.
The Chinese class had a memorable entrance, coming down the aisles of the auditorium with a decorative dragon maneuvered by the students. The Chinese class brought much energy and excitement, singing and performing a choreographed dance that everyone seemed to love. After the Chinese class, the Latinos in Action reentered the stage in flowy, white dresses, executing another wonderful dance.
Emma Sinca, an exchange student from Belgium, stepped onto the stage next, singing “Mamma Mia,” a beautiful French song. The People of the Pacific finished off the assembly with a dance, combining strategic movements and cool rhythms to make for a perfect closing of this event.
“It was really fun! It was cool to see all the different dances and how much the classes prepared for it.” Siqi Pang expressed. Student Quinn Boxx shared similar feelings.”I thought it was really fun and my favorite assembly we’ve had this year for sure.” Most seemed to reciprocate Boxx and Pang’s feelings of enjoyment towards the assembly.
The display of cultures through song and dance made for a memorable performance. Thank you to everyone who dedicated time to participate in the assembly, and everyone who was working behind the scenes to make this happen!
