Sweethearts this year, on Saturday, February 8, was Silver Screen themed. This gave the fun opportunity to dress as a favorite TV show character, entertainer, or celebrity couple. Tickets were only $10 each, making it very affordable for students. The dance was from 8-10 pm, however, past Timpview dances were from 9-11 pm, and many students that attended wished it had been later than 10. This shift in time change was not a crowd-favorite.
Sweethearts was at Sleepy Ridge Golf Course in Orem, a beautiful and perfect venue for this event. It was lined with posters, balloons, streamers, and movie-themed decor. Not only were the decorations great, but the atmosphere as well, with many people dancing and socializing around the sides of the room. The dance was on the third floor, which was a ballroom, and people had begun to form a mosh-pit in the center. However this made it feel as if the floor was moving and sinking in.
There was a wide variety of original and creative couples costumes, including Kermit and Piggy, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Smurfs, 10 Things I Hate About You, Up, Darla and Alfalfa, multiple Disney couples, and Men in Black to name a few. Most couples who went in a group just picked their own costumes together, so there were many original costumes on the dance floor. But, many groups did matching costumes so they worked as a group. Those who went with their friends were able to express a fun group idea with lots of personality.
The DJ played a variety of songs that many enjoyed, however, there was a common complaint that the songs that were played were unfamiliar and therefore boring. However, the atmosphere was still exciting and fun.
“I feel that Sweethearts can be fun as long as you remain positive,” sophomore Elle Blad commented. “Even if it’s someone you may not see as the ideal partner. Just remember to keep it fun!”
Sweethearts was a fun night of dancing and hanging out with friends. There were some technical complaints. But otherwise, it was a great time.
