With the spring season just around the corner for Timpview athletics, the girls lacrosse team has announced a new head coach. Terry Brown, known for his job as an English teacher at Timpview High School, is stepping into the position of head coach for the girls lacrosse team. Brown has an extensive background in sports, including student coaching the boys basketball team at BYU–Hawaii, writing articles for ESPN and the Los Angeles Times, high school coaching for Provo and Timpview basketball, and working the scoreboard for a variety of outdoor sports, including girls lacrosse.
Brown was not actively seeking the title of head coach, but after multiple rounds of offers received no interest, he stepped up to take on the role of coaching a sport he has little prior knowledge in.
Brown has emphasized that the team is starting from scratch. With a losing season last year and 15 seniors leaving after this upcoming season, he has made it clear that this year marks the beginning of something big. He wants to build a program. “Building a program [to me] is putting the emphasis on becoming better as a team for long-term goals,” Brown said. “And so everybody says that, but we are literally starting from scratch. We didn’t win a lot of games last year. I didn’t coach a lot of games last year. So we get to create it here. I never had a coaching experience where you’ve been able to say that before. But we do.”
With preseason coming to an end, Brown has stressed the importance of “learning the game, and learning about the girls.” Brown, along with his newly hired assistant coaches, has continually put in the effort to get to know each player on the team and plans to play to their strengths to reach the team’s full potential. Brown has remained humble, acknowledging that he isn’t the most familiar with lacrosse but has actively tried to learn the game with resources such as other coaches, players, YouTube videos, and film of higher competing teams.
Tryouts for lacrosse start Monday, February 24, with the team’s first game on March 6. Brown is ready to begin building a program and pushing the team to reach its full potential.
