For years, we’ve heard stories of the legendary one-lunch days of the past, when the school wasn’t divided between the north building and I-wing. A time when we could all eat lunch together in peace. Even recently, one-lunch Thursdays have given us a taste of the magic that eating with all your friends can be. But with rumors swirling around the building that we might see combined lunches make a permanent return, it leaves many wondering, is this a good change?
First off, it’s official: one lunch is coming back. Because of the recent extra funding we’ve received, Timpview has been approved to start construction on its new lunchroom this year. This means the old cafeteria will be closed during construction, moving all tables and students to the commons for lunch. The issue is that without a kitchen, the kitchen staff is forced to prepare food at other schools and bring meals in from off-site. The new hassle only permits food to be brought once a day, forcing a combined lunch.
Starting Monday, February 24th, everyone will make the move to second lunch. From the 24th to the 28th, students will still be able to get their lunch from the cafeteria, but food will be eaten in the commons, great hall, and on the learning steps. However beginning March 3rd, the cafeteria will close and all lunches will be served from the south wall of the commons. These changes will likely continue into the start of next school year when construction on the new cafeteria is finished.
During this time, the new bell schedule will be as follows:
Assistant Principal Yablonovsky expressed his support for the change. Not only does it allow students to have lunch with all their friends, but it is also an improvement from an administrative point of view. Two lunches has always been a disruption to classes because students that are supposed to be eating often wander the halls distracting classes in session. That’s why Assistant Principal Yablonovsky “personally thinks and hopes that it’ll stay one lunch” even after the new cafeteria is finished next school year.
Personally, I, along with what feels like the rest of the school, am excited to say goodbye to 10:30 AM first lunch, which often felt more like breakfast than lunch. The only people dreading the shift to a combined lunch are my fourth-period teachers, to whom I extend my apologies in advance for how late I am going to be every day. But what are your thoughts on this change? Do you think it’s a welcome improvement, or was there already enough people trying to escape the parking lot during lunch time?
