I don’t get why Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is receiving so much hate. It hasn’t even reached theatres yet and people are already deeming it a failure. I know that this genre of film is not everyone’s cup of tea, but you know the saying: “You shouldn’t judge a movie by its horrible CGI dwarves.”
Let’s be completely honest. Disney has fallen behind the times. It felt like for a while, they were stuck in 1937 along with the original Snow White. Their outdated views caused lots of controversy and I felt personally offended that they would even think about making romances. Like, eww. I’d much rather spend my Saturday nights indulging in the wonderful world of headstrong women. And the best part? They’re not married to eligible bachelors. They’re married to their jobs because everyone knows that independent women and romance can’t exist together.
For some reason, this change in storyline is upsetting Disney adults who grew up watching the original movie. They feel like this classic has been modernized to the point where it is not Snow White anymore, however, that is not the case.
Snow White’s iconic black bob has carried over into this adaptation, which I am a fan of. This timeless haircut really ties the whole character together. I think the best part of this classy look is the uncanny resemblance between her and one of my all-time favorite characters: Lord Farquaad. I mean, come on, we all watched Shrek for him. I don’t know how Disney got the rights to his look, but I am very glad they did.
Another thing I’m grateful they didn’t change was the dwarves. Those seven dwarves add so much to the movie, and I think Disney realized that no matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t compete with the original. So they didn’t. Just copy, paste. A little CGI and boom! Plus, think of all the money they saved on actors! That’s probably how they were able to afford the high-quality special effects.
Finally, someone has heard our cry for accurate female representation. Every girl dreams of having a princess they can relate to and I think Snow White will do just that. Hopefully, this will be the start of a new era for Disney. No more charming princes. No more underage marriages. No more chivalry. This is the 21st century after all. Women don’t need men to hold doors open for them. And who knows? Maybe in the future, Disney will feature a heroic princess saving a dude in distress. The possibilities are endless. If you are still debating whether to see it or not, I encourage you to take a chance and heal your inner girlboss. I for one am a sucker for a good feminist rebellion, so you know where to find me opening night: front row, eating snacks I definetly did not sneak in, two months of allowance spent on a ticket to see what might be the greatest movie of our generation.
