On Saturday, February 22, Timpview athlete Jane Hedengren set a new national record of 9 minutes and 37 seconds in the 3200 meter at the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho. This comes after Jane just recently won the Gatorade 2025 Girls Cross Country National Player of the Year, one of the biggest awards in high school sports. With a 9.37 time, and the constant record-breaking runs, this athlete is virtually unstoppable.
When asked about her most recent race, Jane commented, “I was really just trying to come in expectation-free, I was just seeing what I was capable of for the day, because I knew how strong and how I had been working hard.” Jane is undeniably a dedicated worker, and it pays off. She is a great example of how discipline and motivation are some of the most important parts of being a successful athlete.
Jane also shared her usual day-to-day training schedule. “Usually, I’ll have some cross training in the morning before school, anywhere around an hour, whether that’s in the pool or outside. Then after school, I’ll have a run and that will include a workout with intervals, or sometimes it’ll just be an easy run, which will usually be around 10 to 12 miles.” Then, Jane said that she lifts for an hour, does some strength training, and finishes in the sauna. So, it is evident that her workouts take up a lot of time. Hedengren is undeniably dedicated to her physical health, and her determination to improve can be recognized through her daily schedule.
Jane’s next race will be on March 13 in New York City at the Nike Nationals, which she is very excited for. “I’ll be running the 5K and the mile. I’m hoping to break the national record in the 5K. It’s currently 15:25, and I’m hoping to run in the low 15:20’s or even break 15:20, which might qualify me for the U.S. National Championships.” If Jane were to break the 5K record, it would be an amazing accomplishment and set her above. But either way, her success at her upcoming race will be worthwhile. By setting goals for herself, she is confident in her abilities. It is exciting to see what she will accomplish next.
