Timpview’s long awaited ‘Battle of the Bands’ took place on Monday, March 3, in the commons after school. Battle of the Bands gives high school bands an opportunity to perform in front of their peers and potentially go on to a multi-regional competition. So, this is an amazing opportunity for students starting their music career.
As soon as the bell rang, students gathered around the set in the middle of the commons to watch Timpview’s bands. The debuting band Past Writings performed first, and started off the competition strong with an energetic performance of “Looking Out For You”, and finished with a soulful original that became a crowd favorite. Past Writings described their band as Latin Rock and Indie, with much influence from the many diverse members of their band.
Then, senior Abigail Davis, the first of two solo acts, followed their performance with a heartfelt original song on acoustic guitar which was well-loved by the audience.
Lady Macbeth set stage next, standing out as the only female-leading band competing. Their

music immediately cut through the audience as they played their original song; the singer led the heavy instrumentals with her strong vocals, complementing their angsty metal sound. They finished their set with a cover of “I’m Just a Girl” by No Doubt, causing an uproar of applause throughout the audience. However, this was a last minute change, as explained by the band’s drummer. They originally planned to perform “Man in the Box” by Alice in Chains, but were asked to change their song due to restrictions, regardless of their prior lyric changes.
Multiple unique acts followed, including a rock-a-billy style performance by The Regulators and an acoustic solo act by Gwyneth. The crowd followed this soloist with their phone flashlights.
At this point, the last two highly anticipated bands were set to finish off The Battle of the Bands. The Lipps, an indie-rock band, started their set by covering “Pleaser” by Wallows. The audience was left energetic and happy by their performance, and their original song received lots of positive attention. Their original, “Apple Juice” was a familiar favorite too, as they had released the song earlier in the year. The band had an overall mellow tone compared to other competing rock bands, seeming to play it safe. Additionally, the band was recognizable due to their sunglasses gimmick that they all wear during performances.
The last competing band, Lavon, took the stage with an electric group of only three people. Immediately the crowd was filled with the band’s wild energy as they performed with an excitement that was different from any of the acts before them. The zealous punk band finished the competition with a cover of “Bad Mouth” by post-hardcore band Fugazi, wrapping up the hard-earned talent that was showcased throughout the competition. John Wilson, the lead singer and guitarist of the band, described his experience with the crowd by saying, “One of my favorite parts was seeing my friends jump around during the songs and getting to perform with my brother.”
Once Lavon exited the floor, it was time for the judges to make a decision on the winners of the 2025 ‘Battle of the Bands’. While the judges were deciding, a bonus performance from the two-man show Freakazoid Exhibition entertained the crowd. Unfortunately, they were unable to compete because of a member unexpectedly quitting. Nevertheless, they put on a good show as the audience anxiously awaited the outcome of the competition.
After about ten minutes, the rewards were announced. The solo-act winner went to Abigail Davis. Then for the bands, third place was given to Lady Macbeth, second to Lavon, and first place was awarded to The Lipps. With that, Timpview’s Battle of the Bands was concluded and band members as well as audiences were left debating the outcome of the competition, and congratulating all of the brave and talented people who put themselves out there for their music. Leo Auernig, one of the guitarists for The Lipps, described his experience: “I did not expect to win,” he said, “I was stoked to be able to compete there with everyone. There’s a lot of talented people in the music scene here in Timpview. I am so grateful for all the love we got and to be able to compete with all of those people.”
Now, The Lipps will move onto the regional round of Battle of the Bands where they will play against the winners of other high schools. This long-awaited event was a success and the crowd was pleased with the diverse groups of bands, as there was a genre for everyone.
