King of the school, head of the honcho, and the cream of the crop. There are many titles that do justice to the immense power and status gained by reaching the 4th year of high school. But what really makes senior year so great? Is it watching the basketball team lose deep into the playoffs four years in a row? Perhaps it’s the privilege of being able to date the freshmen? Maybe it’s the fact that half of your friends have graduated, leaving you behind only to watch as they immediately get engaged to be wed. Nay, I tell you that none of those pleasures hold a candle to what truly makes senior year as renowned as it is. The real reason is choice, this time of everyone’s lives marks a crossroad, a time where we can truly decide where we want to go and who we want to become. With that being said, here are three choices that I hope you make when your last year finally rolls around.
1. Apply for BYU with your subpar GPA and unimpressive ACT
Would you like to spend dozens of hours on a glorified scavenger hunt? Well then I have the college application for you. Get immersed in the writing of seven essays which constantly remind you how mundane your life experiences are. And extra points for being a white, straight, and male, I’m sure everyone wants to hear your story.
2. Enroll in a plethora of AP classes without any of your friends
The AP class is a staple of the wannabe academic weapon, but it is nowhere as marvelous without the beloved AP test. So, you’re telling me I get to spend my parents money on a test only to further disappoint them? Say no more. Now take all that sweet goodness then add the cherry on top of your friends having only one class per day. And enjoy your ice cream of social isolation.
3. Be grateful for the progression you have made, and enjoy each moment
Senior year truly is an important life milestone, it’s the product of effort, determination and grit. High school isn’t easy by any means, there are lists of challenges that come about because of it. But, it is also a place where you can find yourself and what makes you happy. This is the time of your life with the most freedom and least responsibilities, and taxes. Don’t take a single moment for granted, love the people who got you through it and appreciate the setbacks that will make you into a resilient person. And don’t forget, the freshmen aren’t off limits! (Guys that part was satire I promise).
