In the past 20 years, there has never been a more dominant tennis team than the Timpview T-Birds in their current glory. The T-birds are experiencing the season of their lives as they remain undefeated in their region. At their recent high school match, Timpview displayed their skill in a 6-1 win over Orem, one of the more dominant teams in Utah.
The team has been upsetting high schools all over Utah. In a recent match against Lone Peak High School, the current 6A state champions, Timpview won in a tight 4-3 matchup, with Timpview 1st singles Ryan Austin clinching the victory for the T-birds in a tiebreaker.
Many acclaim the T-birds dominance to its impressive roster of players, however one cannot forget to mention the impressive coaching staff that leads the T-Birds out. Former alumni and Timpview tennis state champion Emmett Hart head coaches the team. Along with that, veteran Nate Warner is assisting. With this duo in charge, the team has experienced a lot of change from previous seasons. Coach Hart hosts challenge match opportunities weekly, giving players plenty of opportunities to move up and down the roster. Coach Emmett believes this will allow the team to reach its full potential, and give the team its best shot at state.
With the team comprising of 5 seniors and 2 juniors, many are nervous about the future of Timpview tennis after this season. When asked about the future of Timpview tennis, Senior Davis Gunnell said, “The team right now is el Fuego, and even after we seniors leave, we are gonna continue to dominate.”
Timpview tennis has a history of dominance, with a total of 18 state titles and seven consecutive state championships spanning from 2003-2009. However in recent years the T-birds have struggled to clinch another state title. The last state title won by Timpview was in 2016. The T-Birds are hoping to change that this year.
The Timpview tennis team has a wonderful opportunity, as they could be the ones to clinch Timpview High School’s 100th state championship in any sport. Let’s all wish them luck as the moment of truth grows closer.
