Ever since I was little, I’ve had this fantasy of my perfect prom dress. Dreaming about tulle, satin, and sequins. I’d even watch movies about prom like Footloose and She’s All That.
But now, I’ve started to wonder if the perfect dress is even worth it. I’m skeptical about spending $200 on a formal dress. One that I’ll probably only wear once. Then it will sit in the back of my closet collecting dust.
I had this idea in my head, after watching Ten Things I Hate About You for the twelfth time, of wearing the “perfect” dress for the “perfect” night. But prom is certainly not all it’s cracked up to be. Because nobody is going to have that perfect prom night you see in the movies. Realistically, it’s just not real life. It’s a fantasy and just that. Wearing your dream dress isn’t going to make you Julia Stiles. No matter how much you wish your life was a fantasy.
But perhaps that’s the point of prom. To be able to live in a fantasy for just one night. Dress up in a “perfect” dress and feel like Julia Stiles when you put it on.
Because after all you only go to your prom a few times in your life. You want to be able to look back at your pictures. Treasure them in a photo book. So you can pull it out every once in a while and remember the time you felt like you looked perfect in your dream dress.
Everyone says that prom is monumental. Something that you’ll be glad you experienced.
All I want is to feel like Julia Stiles for one night.
But is it even worth it when Heath Ledger isn’t standing next to you?
When you know that there’s no such thing as the perfect prom night.
I do think it’s worth it though. To buy or find a dress that is specifically for your prom night. Because it’s a memento you can have forever. Or at least remember forever. Even if you don’t keep your prom dress you’ll still remember it. I think you should give in to your childhood fantasies at least once. Let yourself have a little fun and buy yourself a prom dress.
