This year, starting on May 5th, two weeks of AP testing began all throughout the nation. This year, however, the tests have been given differently than their standard paper format. The majority of the tests were taken on computers, with some exams being a hybrid, and some continued on paper. There are mixed feelings about whether or not this maintained the integrity of keeping the tests fair for all students.
The pros of being able to take these tests online eliminates the stress for error when filling in the identifying information at the beginning of paper tests. This process for some can become a distracting factor when taking the paper tests as there is some slight room for error and possible test cancellation. As for taking the actual test, many students found that filling out the multiple choice sections became easier when the test was taken online as it made it easier to secure your answer without doubting if it was the right bubble or not. For the free response questions on each test, students have traditionally become more accustomed to typing out their answers, which made this process of the test easier for many.
The cons of being able to take AP tests online is that it makes it harder to look between the computer and paper you are working with. For example, during the hybrid AP Calculus test, I personally found that it was difficult not being able to directly look at the question for the FRQ’s, and worried about correctly transferring the information over to their answer booklet. It also made it difficult when taking the MCQ portion of the tests because you were not able to mark up the questions and easily compare each answer.
The most efficient system in my opinion is the hybrid tests. This is because it provides students with the accuracy of being able to feel more secure in their MCQ selections, as well as giving a better workspace for the FRQ’s. Overall, I think that taking the tests online is a great way to advance the AP system. It will provide greater accuracy in scoring the tests, and will be less time consuming for those at College Board.
