The theme for this year’s homecoming dance is “Spiderman: Homecoming”. When I first heard about it I did not like it. I’ve always thought that it is weird to have a dance be themed around a movie. So I decided to do some research to see if other people agreed with my thought process. At first I found lots of people that agreed with me. “I wish it was Fortnite themed.” said junior Teo Oscarson. Junior Jonah Dishman also opposes, saying he would “prefer that it was Minecraft themed.”
This was easy to hear, because these people shared my opinion that “Spiderman: Homecoming” is not a good theme for our homecoming dance. But I knew that it is good to see all sides of a story so I kept interviewing people and soon realized that many people had completely different opinions. Such as Nathaniel Paige (his street name is Dougie Fresh) who thinks that the theme is epic. Or Everett Bushman who thinks that it is “Kinda “tuff”.” I even interviewed some teachers such as Auto Shop teacher Mr White, who said that this theme is “Really cool!”
At this point I was a little conflicted. Initially I thought that the theme of “Spiderman: Homecoming” was cringe to the max. But at this point I was starting to realize that maybe it wasn’t so bad. This conflict led me to Timpview’s infinite source of knowledge and inspiration: Mr. Whatcott. He started by telling me about his favorite dance, where there was “this crazy mosh pit…everyone was having a blast. I couldn’t even remember the theme of the dance but that didn’t matter. ” He also told me about his senior prom, which had the theme of “Life is a Highway,” where everyone signed an old car while they reminisced about their high school experience. “It was so great to have one last chance to spend time with my friends before high school was over,” Whatcott explained. This is when I made the connection: a great dance has nothing to do with the theme, it’s about having a fun time with your friends. So even though this year’s theme is a little strange, remember that with great power, comes great responsibility.
