Imagine this, you are just wrapping up your Homecoming night, you drop off your date, drive home, and just as you are getting ready to go to bed you get a text with a flyer. The flyer says that you are being asked to Sadies, but you aren’t even getting a poster yet. IT”S JUST A PREORDER. Say goodby
e to the suspense of wondering who is going to ask you and the surprise of finding a poster on your front door.
School dance culture at Timpview is kind of out of hand, and people have been asking earlier and earlier. What’s next? Are people going to start asking for one dance before the previous one is even over?
I’d like to make a prediction. I think that as time goes on, Timpview students will start to dislike dances because of how cutthroat it is becoming. Just think about it: dances are becoming more of a stressor than a fun activity. People have to rush to get a date, make the perfect poster, and then plan the perfect day. And then you need to be on your best behavior the whole time. This is too much pressure for the average Timpview student. I think that dances will start to phase out.
I don’t think that anyone wants this. In my mind, whether or not it happens is in the hands of Timpview students. We need to change how we treat dances. Instead of rushing to ask each other, we should take our time, being courteous of others who might want to ask the same person that we do.
By far, my biggest problem with dances is the pressure to say yes. I think that if you get asked by someone that you don’t know or hardly know, it should be socially acceptable to say no. I know too many people that have been asked by someone that they don’t know and the dance ends up being very awkward.
Lastly, I think that students should have more of a say of the details of the dance. In a way, students already do choose because it is decided by Student Government. But we can’t all be in Student Government, and they don’t always choose the best things. My proposal is for all students to have 2 weeks to vote on the theme. For the venue, I think that all dances besides Prom should be held on the football field, unless it is raining or snowing, in which case it would be moved to the commons. However, if it is in the commons the doors MUST be open because it gets so hot in there. For Prom, I think that the students should be given 3 non-school venues to vote on.
Thank you for taking the time to read my article. If you have any opinions on this, please leave a comment. I’d love to hear what you have to say.
