The Timpview Thunderbirds face off against the Orem High Tigers at Orem High School this Friday (Sep 26) at 7 pm. This rivalry game has been highly anticipated, and will be a game that you don’t want to miss.
The T Birds have started with an even 3-3 record on the season so far, coming off a victory against Maple Mountain. A win this weekend would be monumental for the team. Going into the last three games of the season with a winning record and a four game winning streak would create lots of momentum and hopefully give the team a better chance at a higher seed for the playoffs.
The Timpview vs Orem rivalry has been a big deal for both schools in all sports, especially football. Recent transfers of past Timpview players, such as senior Aisa Galeai, to Orem high have further escalated the tension between the Tigers and Thunderbirds, making the rivalry win even sweeter to the team that takes it home.
When asked about this week’s game compared to the others, senior kicker Luke Thornock said, “this game always means a lot more to us than the rest of the regular season games.” I asked him if this game is different because of the players that transferred from Timpview to Orem. He responded, saying, “I think the stakes have changed for the game but not just because Aisa transferred…they have a lot more talent in general this year than past years, so they pose more of a threat to us and our playoff spot.” This makes the game even more important, which means the players need to be prepared. Thornock said he is “trying to take care of my body as much as possible so that I can feel my best and play my best.” This preparation physically as well as mentally is very important in such a high stakes game.
Students, teachers and fans from Timpview and Orem alike are excited to see this excellent matchup on Friday, and are ready for the rivalry to continue.
