SkillsUSA Steps in to Help

SkillsUSA Steps in to Help

Amidst the ear-splitting cry of a parade of machinery and plumes of sawdust, the Timpview Chapter of SkillsUSA spent hours in the woodshop during (and after) Consultation on Monday, fabricating child-sized rocking chairs with nothing more than lumber, screws, and a selfless attitude.

“Normally SkillsUSA builds toys for the families in need, but this year we decided to do rocking chairs” Mr. Whatcott said.  “Any profits we make from selling the chairs will go towards the Sub for Santa funds, and any chairs not sold will go directly to the families themselves.”

A greater purpose of charity was present at the event, buried deep beneath the chaos of a dozen Skills members, and several advisors, working to build as many rocking chairs as possible in the allotted 2 hours.  During this annual service project, T-Birds specializing in everything from woodworking to auto mechanics stepped in to help the families in need this Christmas season.

The rocking chairs will be sold at the Financial Office for $40 a piece, and currently there are 10 in stock.  “Should we sell all of the chairs by Friday, then we’d make more of them as more people order them,” Mr. Whatcott said.  “Last year we made about $400, so it should be pretty good this year.”
