Volleyball. Chances are, you’ve heard of this sport, and maybe even played it before. It’s a popular, casual, outdoor and indoor sport, played at family cookouts and gatherings across the country, and played as one of the biggest and most competitive girls high school sports.
You would think that Volleyball would also be a popular sport among boys. But as of right now, Utah is one of the 16 states to not have Boys Volleyball as a sanctioned sport. Even with Boys Volleyball being an official highschool sport, there is a large supply of Boys Volleyball players. Because it has yet to be sanctioned, Boys Volleyball Club leagues have exploded in scale. In 2019, there were 81 highschool teams represented by 56 schools, and in 2021 that number continued to grow, now with over 108 highschools combining for more than 64 teams.
One of these teams is even made up of our own Timpview T-Birds, combined with some of our friends across town friends at Provo High. Although Utah has had an increased interest in the sport, with exploding numbers of players and teams, the UHSAA voted against sanctioning it for the 2021-2022 school year. Valiant efforts from the community with one petition receiving over 8 thousand signatures were, unfortunately, unsuccessful this year. Volleyball players and enthusiast alike will look to next year’s vote for a change of sanction status.
