Tennis time again. As always in late February the tennis players of Timpview High School meet at the courts after school for tryouts. All walks of athletes came out, from professionally traveling out of state monthly for tournaments, to some wanting to try the sport for the first time, and even a few soccer players. The spread for the coaches was diverse and difficult to manage. By the end of the week around 30-40 kids on a list would be trimmed to a meager 26. Players competed against each other in short matches to determine the order from best to worst. These short matches can bring out the competitive side of most players as every point matters and every player is determined. In the end, the varsity list goes, Ryan Austin, Joe Jurca, Davis Gunnell, Rowan Halladay, Daniel Buetler, Braden Meier, Luke Clark. Although coach Nate Warner has said that there is some wiggle room on the lineup. There are still a lot of players fueled with motivation to get back up and the lineup could still change.
Last year Timpview took third place in their region only beaten by Alta and Orem. In state, Timpview was a 14th. Disappointed with both outcomes the coaches and players have been grinding all off-season. Coach Warner says “It’s one of my big goals to be region champs this year”. Timpview tennis is in a new region and it looks more promising this year. So far Timpview swept Springville in their first match and has upcoming matches against Maple Mountain and again against Springville
The Timpview team is very young and has high hopes for this year and the year after that. It’s unanimous that the team wants to win the region and contend in the state. Timpview could prove to be an actual threat at state. While they don’t have one amazing player, they have a lot of good players. Timpview is very deep so doubles will always be a good team no matter the players or combination.
Come out and support the team at their home matches at 3:30!
