Americans have either been waiting or dreading for the day Trump returns to office. But either way, here’s the scoop on his first full day back.
This is a little known fact, but Trump loves Diet Coke. He has shared that he is sober and that instead of alcohol, he has a special love for Diet Coke. His sobriety has brought upon his “Diet Coke Button”. This was used by Trump during his first term, and was again spotted after he was sworn in as the 47th president on Monday, January 20th. The White House has brought back the Diet Coke Button so the newly inaugurated President so that he can order his drink of choice easily from the Oval Office.
Trump has been busy signing orders, and here are some of the biggest ones so far.
Immigration: Trump declared a National emergency at the U.S. Southern border, which will prompt a widespread crackdown on immigration. The President aims to decrease the number of immigrants from Mexico. Along with his declaration of a national emergency, president Trump reinstated the “Remain in Mexico” policy which ensure that immigrants seeking asylum will remain in Mexico until their U.S. immigration court date.
Tariffs: Trump stated that his administration will impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada on February 1, a change in North American trade policy that could raise prices for American consumers. Inflation is already high, and many Americans hope that this inflation will decrease, but it is unclear.
Employment: The President signed an executive order requiring federal departments to order employees to return to the office five days a week —a move he previously promised—along with a threat to fire those who don’t comply. “If people don’t come back to work, come back into the office, they’re going to be dismissed,” Trump said during a fall press conference. He wants to get people back into a more strict work schedule.
Social: Trump has announced he will ensure government agencies won’t violate the first amendment right of free speech, and has suspended the TikTok ban for 75 days in hopes of a private investor buying the platform. He also decreed that “it is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.” The order read that these sexes are not interchangeable and are fundamental to reality. Along with these social changes, he has ordered to dismantle government “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” initiatives, and base these hiring and decisions for opportunity on merit alone.
Other: Trump has issued a full pardon for around 1,500 people who were involved on the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, which took place 4 years ago. He is also formally establishing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which aims to cut other government departments in order to decrease spending, and increase efficiency. Billionaire Elon Musk has become a major part of Trump’s campaign and administration, and is set to become a part of the new department DOGE. Another significant order that Trump has signed is the declassification of the John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. assassination files, something Americans have wondered about for decades.
Environmental: Trump repealed all the climate executive orders that were put in place during the Biden Administration. He removed the U.S. from the Paris Agreement, the international treaty to limit greenhouse gas emissions. Trump also called upon the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to review aspects of regulatory policies on climate. Additionally, the president pushed or oil drilling, as he stated, “drill baby, drill”. There were many executive orders that revolved around removing Biden’s previous orders to protect the planet.
It appears as if there are going to be many changes to the nation. Through it all, Trump is ready to sip his diet coke and get back to work!
