Skipping class is nothing new at Timpview High School, but why do so many students do it?
Skipping class is about way more than just avoiding homework, some students are just looking for a break, while others want time to hang with friends. Here’s what we learned from a few Timpview students who shared their reasons for ditching class.
Madi Naef, a senior, isn’t shy about why she skips school. “I skip school because I don’t need to go to classes and I just don’t want to go to school.” For Madi, it’s as simple as that. She doesn’t feel the need to be there, and sometimes, she just doesn’t feel like it. It’s not about being rebellious; it’s more about choosing when she feels like being present and when she doesn’t.
Senior Kate Reichner has a similar attitude, but adds a more laid-back twist. “What I do when I skip class is go take a nap or hang out with friends.” For her, skipping class is her chance to recharge. It’s not about avoiding school work—it’s more about catching a break from the stress of school and spending time with friends, doing things that help her relax.
Austen Amos, a sophomore, agrees with the idea of taking a break. “When I skip class, I get food or go to my house or hang out with my friends,” she said. Whether it’s grabbing some food or just hanging out, Austen uses her skipped class time to unwind and enjoy a little bit of freedom. For her, it’s a way to clear her head and do something she enjoys outside of school.
Senior Sadie Sitake, who admits she skips school most of the time, has a similar routine. “I skip school most of the time, I am sitting in my car or Ady’s car, and we go get drinks,” Sadie said. For her, skipping school is about hanging out with her friends, having a good time, and escaping for a little while. She’s not necessarily trying to dodge learning—just taking time for herself and her friends.
While everyone has their own reasons for skipping class, there’s a clear pattern here: students aren’t just skipping school for no reason. They’re looking for a break from the pressures of school life, whether it’s to relax, hang out, or just escape for a bit. It might not be the best decision in terms of academics, but it shows how much students need a mental reset during the school year.
The whole ‘skipping’ culture is something that should be considered. If students are regularly skipping school to take care of their mental health or just relax, maybe the way we approach school needs a little rethinking. In the meantime, students at Timpview will keep making their own choices, deciding when they want to skip class and when they’ll show up.
