The Timpview Boys Lacrosse team has had a great season and still has time to do more. For senior Zack Russ, what started as a casual invitation turned into a four-year love for one of the fastest-growing sports in Utah.
“I originally started playing because a teammate on the football team told me they needed a goalie,” Russ recalled. “I agreed to come to a practice, and I stuck with it because lacrosse is genuinely the funnest sport, and I loved everyone on the team, especially the coaches.”
Now in his senior season, Russ has become a critical member of the team, both as a player and a leader. And while his individual skills in the cage have sharpened over the years, what he values most are the moments shared with teammates. One memory, in particular, stands out.
“One of the most memorable moments this season was James [Bauer] scoring the game-winner against Spanish Fork,” Russ said. “They were heavy favorites, and we were coming off a tough week of practice. Bauers’ goal in the final seconds was everything. That win meant a lot because it showed how hard we worked as a team and led us to finish 5-1 in region, surprising everyone.”
Russ credits his preparation, both mental and physical, for his success on the field. “Physically, it’s about taking care of your body: eating right, getting enough sleep, and drinking plenty of electrolytes,” he said. “Mentally, it’s about approaching every game the same way, knowing you’ve done the work ahead of time so you can play loose and focused.”
As his high school career winds down, Russ hopes to leave behind more than a stat line — he wants to set a standard. His advice for younger players is simple, yet invaluable.
“Listen to Coach Redd and the assistants. They’re the best coaches in Utah, and they’ll give you the answers if you pay attention,” Russ emphasized. “But you also have to put in the work on your own. If you fall in love with the game, the work becomes easy, and you’ll find ways to hone your skills.”
As graduation nears, one thing is clear: Zack Russ isn’t just finishing a senior season— he’s leaving a legacy of heart, hustle, and brotherhood.
