The new season of Smiling Friends has premiered, and it is fantastic. For those who don’t know, Smiling Friends is a newer TV show coming out on Adult Swim in 2020, created by Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel. The show follows a small charity named Smiling Friends Inc., and its employees go around trying to bring happiness to troubled people.
This show reached widespread success because of how unique its over-the-top absurdist humor mixed with the occasional super dry and realistic conversation is. Its unique, over-the-top art style combines tons of different animation types and features lovable characters and more meta and relevant plots with tight writing, given the episodes are only twelve minutes long. The first two seasons of this show were great through and through, but this made me a little worried about this new season. What if it doesn’t live up to the highs set up by season one and two?
This was a very stupid concern of mine. Season three is incredible. The level of production is ramped up, and the animation is firing on all cylinders, especially the background designs, which are breathtaking. The writing has not dipped in quality at all; if anything, it’s elevated. This show is as good as it’s ever been, with some of the best episodes the show has ever seen, particularly the second episode, “Le Voyage Incroyable De Monsieur Grenouille,” being one of the funniest episodes of television I have ever seen. This new season is a must-watch. If you are interested, there are three episodes out right now and a new one each Sunday on HBO Max.
