Here at Timpview, music is a large part of our social culture. A large group of Timpview’s student body uses Spotify as their music platform of choice. Using Spotify comes along with a recap of your personal music stats that comes out towards the end of the year. These stats are called Spotify Wrapped. Some major stats that your Spotify Wrapped shows you are your top 5 most listened to artists, your 100 most listened to songs, how many minutes listened to, and your top genre. For many students, the day Spotify Wrapped comes out is an exciting day to see whether you had an average listening year, or if your Wrapped may expose you.
This year Wrapped came out on Nov. 29, and students are excited to share their thoughts on this year’s Wrapped, along with their stats.
One anonymous Senior described this year’s design as “funky and unique.”. They felt that Wrapped accurately represented their changes in taste of music throughout the year. This particular student had a lot of theater music in their summary, with Ben Platt as a top artist and Broadway as their top genre. “My Wrapped didn’t expose me,” they assured. “People know I like theater, and I do theater. So it was no surprise.”
Junior Taft Smith had a few critiques for Spotify’s delivery this year, sharing it “went by too fast, and [didn’t] have enough information. Especially compared to last year.” A few features were removed or tweaked from last year, including things like listening personality and audio day. That being said, he was happy with his listening recap overall. He listened to mostly pop and singer-songwriters, including artists like Jake Scott and New Rules.
Junior Virginia Robison said she liked the delivery of Wrapped this year and felt it provided a fairly accurate profile of her tastes. Her top spot was taken by Radiohead, trailed by Nada Surf and David Bowie. She worried about being a little exposed, expressing that it gave the impression she has “the music taste of a middle-aged man.” This attitude seems to be shared by many who are slightly embarrassed about their statistics and listening habits.
Many people like to track their listening across several years of Wrappeds, including Senior Evelyn Bigelow. “It feels like a very accurate representation of me.” Bigelow noted it’s the most “normal” her Wrapped has ever looked, and was relieved to grow out of some of her old listening habits. She listened to a whopping 65,434 minutes of music including artists like Dario Marianelli, Lizzy McAlpine, and Gregory Alan Isakov.
Tracking for 2024 Wrapped begins on January 1st and is typically released between Nov. 29 and Dec. 1.
