This past weekend, the Timpview Boys Tennis team made history by winning the state championship title at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. This was Timpview’s 100th state title, and the 19th in boys tennis alone. This makes Timpview one of the only schools in Utah to surpass 100 state championships. Timpview’s first state title came in 1986, in the 3A State Football Final against Springville High School.
Timpview won 3 of the 5 possible brackets with their first win coming in third singles by senior Braden Meier, who defeated his final opponent from Skyline 6-1, 6-4.
The next winners were our first doubles team, which included senior Joe Jurca and his partner senior Luke Clark, winning their final match 6-4, 6-1. When asked about his preparation, Jurca said that the “biggest thing [he] did to prepare was probably traveling and playing in competitive tournaments, helping [him] to get ready for pressure situations and good competition like that.” Jurca believes that the best way to prepare and get better is to have experience and have already been through these situations. This helped him to stay calm under the pressure of a state tournament, leading to his success.
Our last winning group and tournament clinchers was our 2nd doubles team, which was made of senior Nick Gerstner and senior Davis Gunnell. This duo was the last match of the tournament, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. When asked about the winning moment, Gerstner said that “the winning moment was surreal. Like I still can’t even process it. I just remember that last point, realizing we won the entire tournament and clutching the title for the team. I threw my racket and just screamed. I gave my partner (Gunnell) a huge hug.” Gerstner, who has played tennis all 4 years at Timpview, will remember this winning moment forever.
Others who contributed to points towards the win for Timpview included juniors Ryan Austin and Rowan Halladay, who played 1st and 2nd Singles.
Congratulations to the entire team on a great season, and to every state champion in the last 38 years of Timpview’s great success.
