ICE protests have increased across the United States, with Utah among the states where demonstrations have taken place following recent incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota. The deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti have drawn national attention and prompted protests and marches in Minneapolis and other cities. Utah residents have also participated in walkouts and protests at the State Capitol to show support for immigrant communities.
In South Jordan, students from Bingham High School organized a walkout to protest federal immigration enforcement policies. KSL journalist Tim Vandenack interviewed students about their involvement in the demonstration. Bingham High senior Samara Perry said, “We are so sick and tired of not letting our voices be heard.” Some students expressed that they felt younger generations are taking a leading role in advocating for change.
A protest scheduled for January 30 at the Utah State Capitol is encouraging participants to skip work, school, and shopping to attend a rally calling for changes to ICE and federal immigration policies. The event is part of a broader national initiative sometimes referred to as a “National Shutdown,” intended to draw attention to concerns about immigration enforcement and its impacts. As protests and walkouts continue, organizers say participants aim to show solidarity with immigrant communities in Minnesota and across the country.
