Two BYU commits look to make big headlines this season, with the big frame of Dean Rueckert standing at 6’8 and Will Openshaw at a legthy 6’10. Not only are their individual skill sets impressive, but they also have chemistry playing at Timpview High school, and playing club basketball for the Utah Prospects.
Despite many offers between the two of them, they picked BYU. Dean Rueckert had a good relationship with 5 other schools like Washington, Stanford, Clemson and Utah, but nothing felt like home. When asked about why he chose BYU, Dean said, “BYU has a great winning program, and the staff there can help me reach my goal of playing in the NBA … I also believe in what BYU stands for … I want to represent that”. Rueckert is a versatile forward known for his mobility, offensive touch, and ability to spread the floor.
Joining him is Will Openshaw, a long interior presence who brings size, defensive instinct and a smooth offense game. For Openshaw, choosing BYU was about how they could develop him as a player, and also as a person for him to reach his full potential. Will had a couple other schools like Stanford and Utah Tech in the mix. UVU was a close second, building a good relationship with Will. Overall BYU is the next step to help him get to the next level after college.
They both are excited for this upcoming season. With each sharing one goal in mind of winning a state championship, the pair together push each other daily and share a competitive mindset that fits perfectly with BYU’s culture. With both of them committed, Cougar fans can expect a bright future.
