Marty Supreme came out Christmas day, but prior to that the movies’ $70 million marketing budget gave it a lot of attention. From the Marty Supreme windbreaker, Chalamet standing on top of the Sphere in Las Vegas, an orange blimp monogrammed with “MARTY SUPREME” floating in the sky and much more unconventional advertising gave the movie most of its hype.
Going into this film, I did not know much about it other than the fact that the movie was about ping-pong and there was tons of hype surrounding it. Because I am a Timothee Chalamet fan, I gave it a shot, and in conclusion I think that you should too.
The movie is set in 1950s New York. It follows Marty Mouser (Timothee Chalamet), who is an ambitious, smart-mouth table tennis prodigy who will stop at nothing to become a world champion. On the way we meet diverse characters played by familiar names: Kevin O’Leary, Odessa A’Zion, Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyler Okonma (a.k.a Tyler the Creator). These characters take part in Marty’s many thrilling adventures that make the movie the wondrous production that it is.
The genre of the movie is claimed to be a sports drama, however I found myself amongst the entire theater laughing out loud at Marty’s hysterical dialogue and some of the comedic scenes. I would say that if you are looking for a good laugh while gripping onto the edge of your seat, this movie is the one for you.
Marty Supreme was rated 94% on RottenTomatoes, and the Critics Consensus spoke highly of it, stating, “Marty Supreme is a propulsive epic that realizes its sky-high aspirations even while it critiques its indelible hero’s ambition.” Other positive reviews come from IMDB stating, “Marty Supreme is a top tier movie from Josh Safdie as well as one of the best movies of 2025”. However, some Reddit users critiqued the movie by saying “it’s an anxiety inducing movie, in a time of fear and anxiety. It’s a horrible way to spend 2.5 hours, especially on a Christmas showing”. Although some felt this way, I thought the thrilling movie was an adventurous ride that I didn’t want to end.
In conclusion, Marty Supreme has received lots of mixed reviews but overall a stellar rating. I will be rooting for it all of award season as the movie and its characters have already been nominated for multiple big time awards. Marty Supreme might even make it on my Letterboxd “top 4” movies.
