On January 7, 2026, Minneapolis became the site of a fatal shooting by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. The incident happened during a large federal enforcement operation in the city, and has sparked controversy and protests.
According to eyewitness accounts, a 37 year old Minneapolis woman named Renee Nicole Good was in her Honda Pilot on Portland Avenue when an ICE agent fired multiple shots into the SUV. These shots struck and killed Renee. The vehicle then continued down the street and crashed into parked cars.
Renee was described by friends and family as a mother, poet and committed community member. She was living in Minneapolis with her wife and children.
Federal and local authorities have offered drastically different accounts of what led to the shooting. Officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE have defended the agent’s actions, claiming that Renee “weaponized her vehicle”, and that the fatal shots were purely justifiable self defense.
However, witnesses of the event and recorded video footage challenge this narrative. Bystander recordings appear to show Renee’s vehicle attempting to drive away from agents rather than charging at them. The lethal shots were fired as she was moving past the officer.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz have called the federal version of events a “garbage narrative,” and have publicly criticized the shooting as unjustified.
The shooting is currently being investigated. The public remains engaged and concerned as protests continue. Many community members see the shooting as a part of a broader concern about federal law enforcement targeting immigrants and their supporters.
Renee’s family has issued heartfelt statements emphasizing her compassion and community involvement, stressing that she was in Minneapolis to support neighbors and that they were unarmed and peaceful. Becca, Renee’s wife, gave an account that highlights the emotional and human impact of the event beyond political rhetoric.
The Minneapolis ICE shooting has become a flashpoint in the national debate over immigration enforcement, use of force by ICE and other federal agents and accountability in law enforcement. The incident raises critical questions about how federal law enforcement operates in local communities.

Such an evil thing to do. And the fact that it happened to another person is sad. RIP Alex Pretti and Renee Good. They never deserved death.
