The boy’s basketball team improved to 14-1 after a Friday night battle (Jan 16) in the Thunderdome against Payson to kick off region play. They dominantly won 85-51. After the win, the Thunderbirds keep their number 1 rank in Utah, and stay consistent at #17 nationally. This is an important win for the team to set the tone for region at 1-0.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Thunderbirds had 5 players in double digits. The team was led by Dean Rueckert at 22 points, followed by Mason Ford (16), Jackson Palmer (15), Cooper Cleveland (11) and Will Openshaw (10). The team took an early lead, getting up by more than 10 at half, and never looking back after that. As efficiency on the offensive side of the ball increased, so did the field goal percentage, with the team shooting 61%. As for Payson, they were led by junior Scott Bylund with 15 points, followed by Austin Staheli (13) and Garrison Hill (11). The Thunderbirds were able to keep the Lions to a 45% field goal percentage.
Further dominating the game, the Thunderbirds played outstanding defense. The team was extremely successful on defense with 14 steals, 5 blocks and 18 turnovers forced. Notably, Sophomores Jayden Palmer and Jackson Ford gave great defensive energy, picking up their guys full court.
Overall it was a great team win for the Thunderbirds, and it provided motivation and focus to the beginning of region play.
