This past weekend, I went to Sweethearts. And if I’m being honest, I’ve never been a big fan of the actual dance part. Arrive late. Quick photo booth picture. Socialize. Mosh to a few songs. Leave early. That’s what I’ve always done. However, Sweethearts was a different story.

The first thing I noticed was how easy it was to get in. I expected to see a mass of people shoving their way through a long line. Instead, I was greeted with a ten-second wait to show my tickets and receive my wristband. Whether this was the result of a more efficient system or the fact that my group showed up half an hour late is unknown, however, it was a nice change from the usual wait.

Venue locations for dances are something I advocate for, but I understand that it’s not always possible given the student turn-out and funds. Regardless, I stick to my mindset that the school commons are still the school commons, no matter how many decorations you throw on the walls. That’s why I was not expecting to be so impressed by the decorations and set-up. Banners and barrels and other Western-themed decor was placed throughout the room. Wanted posters featuring administration and teachers were hung up on the windows. The photo-booths were located in the main office lobby, away from the crowd. But the show-stealer had to be the lights and red fabric draped from the ceiling, turning the school in an elegant dance floor.

Before I knew it, it was 9:45. My whole group was shocked that we had been there for over an hour, and we found ourselves wanting to stay until the end. Although I can’t speak for everyone, most agree that Sweethearts exceeded their expectations. Out of my three years at Timpview, the Sweethearts set-up has been my favorite. I look forward to seeing if Morp, Prom, or any of the future school dances can top this.
