Paintings, poems, dance and music; Jane Church is an artist of many varieties.
A senior this year, Church has been dancing since she was 3 years old. She takes contemporary classes outside of school and dances for the Timpview Dance Crew. Along with dance, she is a fantastic and passionate singer. She started official choir classes in 3rd grade, but she remarks that she “honestly [doesn’t] remember ever not singing throughout [her] childhood.” She began taking private lessons a little over a year and a half ago, the improvements she made driving her to become more serious and focused on improving her singing abilities.
“I’ve always loved music; singing and dancing and getting to perform really excited me,” Church says. As she was growing up, her dad was her biggest inspiration musically, playing bass and guitar, being in a few bands and always sharing his musical knowledge with his daughter.
“Some of my best memories have been getting to perform here at Timpview,” said Church. She’s had an impressive singing career here at Timpview, participating in Sorelle Voce as a freshman, A Cappella as a sophomore and Madrigals her junior and senior years. She’s also currently serving in her second year on the Choir Council.
The crowning jewel of her Timpview choir career is her senior Aria concert. She will be singing “Se tu M’ami” by Alessandro Parisotti with the Chamber Orchestra accompanying her. This song is powerful, strong, deep and beautiful. Church’s voice is amazing, and she performs the song with such passion, skill and control. When asked how she landed on her Aria selection she said, “This is one of the first songs I learned with a voice coach, and I loved it the moment I heard it. I think the Italian language is beautiful and I couldn’t have expected how great it’d sound with an orchestra!” She’s not overexaggerating; it truly does sound amazing with the orchestra.
Church hopes to attend BYU next fall and is considering going into music or advertising. “I definitely want to continue singing after high school,” said Church. “I think it would be so cool to do it at a professional level! I’m hoping to be able to train more once I head to college.” Along with college, Church would love to travel the world and see everything, maybe even pursuing photography as a career.
Jane lives her life by the principle that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so you might as well try. This principle carries on to the advice she’d give younger musicians and singers. She would tell them not to give up. “It can be hard being brave and finding the confidence to sing, but you perform at your best when you have confidence in yourself!” She also encourages any passionate singers not to be afraid to get private lessons, reflecting on how her lessons have helped her realize that singing could be a real part of her future.
Jane Church is an accomplished performer, passionate artist, and beautiful soul, drawing her inspiration from artists and art that came before. Her Aria performance this upcoming Thursday (November 20th) is absolutely not something you want to miss.
