Once again, Timpview Theatre has outdone themselves, this time with a magical performace of Almost, Maine. This production has been in the workings since mid-December, with actors and crew putting in so much dedication and hard work to make this show possible.
This play tells the story of various couples, all living in the territory of Almost, Maine. A struggling marriage. A pair of best friends. A newly engaged couple. Each story explores a deeper meaning of love, and what it can look like – the beautiful and the messy.
“My favorite part of Almost Maine has been the fact that the cast has so many people who I haven’t work with before, and it’s been amazing to get to know new people.” Mili Rose explained.
Sloan Chase expressed similar feelings towards her experience. “My favorite part has been the people. I come from band, which is a close knit family, but in such a different way to the theatre kids. Both are so great in their own ways, and I’ve felt so seen and loved and I swear I’ve never met such funny people.”
Almost, Maine offers an experience for the audience and the actors that is unlike anything else. No matter who you are or your stage of life, there is something you can take-away, whether it’s greater appreciation for the people around you or a deeper understanding of love.
“I’ve learned that love is complicated and difficult, but it’s also magical,” Sophia Morris remarked. “I’m so grateful to be able to step into other people’s shoes and learn so much from them.”
“One thing I have learned is everyone puts in so much work into shows like these and it is really hard to be in and make these shows happen, so one thing I learned is to appreciate people for being there and all they do.” Tali West expressed.
A big theme of this show is seeing the “magical moments” that occur in our everyday lives. Each scene ends with a magical moment: a boot dropping, getting found, healing from those who have hurt you, coming back to the one you loved. It teaches us that our magical moments don’t need to be grand to be appreciated. In light of this, I asked the cast of Almost, Maine what their magical moments were while working on the show.
“There was one moment that stuck with me. I had never performed like this before and before we went on, I was so stressed, but as soon as we finished the scene, I just felt ridiculously happy with how we’d done. As soon as we put down our soda cans, Gaines gave me a huge hug and we were just so hyped, and it made me feel like all the work we’d put in had paid off.”
“My magical moment was probably watching the show from backstage during the Saturday matinee, and just realizing how awesome this show is and how amazing the community we’ve created is.”
“My magical moment happened during tech week. I was seeing the set for the first time, with pink and blue and green lights shining down on everything to create the northern lights effect. It was breathtaking, and it made me realize that sometimes we just have to step back and take a look around us to appreciate what’s going on.”
“My personal magical moment working on this show was walking off stage closing night and immediately being greeted by so many high fives and the biggest hug ever from my best friend in the whole world and being so thankful that I got to be here and tell stories and have so many amazing people surrounding me and supporting me.”
“My magical moment was on Saturday night, when I walked out on stage for my scene and I saw the completely sold out crowd, with kids from other theatre departments sitting on the floor because they had drove from a city an hour away to come see our show.”
“My magical moment was closing night when I walked out onto stage for bows. I looked at the sold out crowd with people sitting on the floor. I looked at my two AMAZING scene partnered that I wouldn’t switch for the world, and the whole cast of Almost Maine.”
“My magical moment was the casts snowball fight on closing night, laughing and running around throwing fake snow at people, having Napierski yell “boys vs girls”, ambushing my scene partner with a cap full of paper flakes. It reminds me of why I do theatre, for the connection. All the amazing friends I’ve made during shows is the most valuable thing I’ve gained in all my years of being alive.”
