Many games have come and gone in my time at Timpview High, but the one thing has been consistent. Block Blast. Games such as brawl stars get on top for a short while, but quickly fall off. Games like retro bowl resurface every once in a while, only to fall off again. But Block Blast has consistently been popular.
Why is Block Blast going to last? It is because people find a game that they love and end up spending over an hour a day on it. But Block Blast isn’t as addictive, it’s good enough to play for 10 minutes but challenging enough to make it easy to stop playing if you want to. Many other games are so mindless that it’s easy to waste an entire afternoon on them. After spending so much time on one game, people identify the problem and quickly delete these apps.
So we’ve established that Block Blast is here to stay. But is this a good thing? In the short term, this probably leads to people spending less time on their phones. But in the long run, if you play the same game a little everyday, it adds up. Over a few years, you can easily rack up hundreds of hours. Hundreds of hours that could have been spent doing productive things.
Is it really possible to fill this lost time with something productive? Doing things like working a job or doing homework require you to block out part of your schedule. But playing mobile games is an easy way to fill in the gaps. There are apps like Duolingo that allow you to learn things instead of wasting time playing games, but some people have found these to be ineffective.
Does any of this really matter? No. Spend your time how you’d like, play Block Blast, and stay sendy T-Birds!
