Right from the beginning tip off, the Student vs Teacher basketball was an absolute success. The teachers dominated every aspect of the game. They dominated the paint, they moved the ball well, and scored efficiently. The students, on the other hand, struggled. Poor ball movement, lack of rebounds, and going about 4/50 from beyond the arc all lead to the students being down 25 before they were allowed to pay their way to victory. The game was filled with fouls, and overall was a very entertaining experience.
The teachers had to overcome adversity early in the game, losing 15th time senior Mathew Wheatley early in the first quarter to a double technical foul and ejection. Wheatley returned secretly in the second quarter, until he committed an egregious foul, getting ejected again. They started their shooting slow, with Coach Kitchen chucking up shots from literally anywhere on the court. But they soon heated up with Mr. Chow going 3/3 from NBA three point range, and Mr. Jensen controlling the paint, scoring 14 from down low. While there is some controversy about the Teachers getting away with “blatant and obvious fouls”, the old heads did seem to deserve the win.
Even halftime was filled with fun dances by the girls basketball team, boys and girls lacrosse teams, girls soccer team, cross country team, and tennis team. The dances were amazingly coordinated, well practiced, and all around breathtaking. The Student team also attempted many dunks, but stuffed all of them.
The Students struggled to get any type of offense going, aside from Senior Jackson Hyde, who led the teams scoring with 9 points. The students struggled to stop the Teachers from scoring, and trailed the entire game by about 25 points. However, as soon as points were up to buy, the students caught up in an instant. The Students faced allegations of being “Pay to win”, but to a very neutral observer, it just seemed like the teachers were being salty, sore losers.
In the end, after all the drama, the students emerged victorious, winning 139-151. Although the Student vs Teacher game is a lot of fun and can be seen as all about winning, it’s really about the cause. The game is a way to raise money for those in our community who are less fortunate during the holiday season. Last night alone, the game raised around a whopping one thousand dollars for Sub 4 Santa. That money will help so many this time of year, and that is truly why the Student vs Teacher game was a success.
