No Coach? No Problem

Daily Herald

It’s the last two weeks of the regular season. Timpview had just lost a painful game to Springville at home. The next game would be a big game against Salem Hills at home, but the only problem is Coach Izzy Ingle won’t be coaching. Due to a double technical and ejection after the loss against Springville, Coach Ingle was suspended by the UHSAA for one game because of the double technical. With only missing one other game in his coaching career, Coach Ingle had to watch the game from another point of view and was unable to attend. With Coach Ingle suspended, that left the big question of who will step up as head coach. Assistant Coach Steve Winn stepped up as head coach against Salem to take Coach Ingle’s place. Coach Winn is one of the most experienced coaches in Utah, being on the coaching staff of Lone Peaks first championship in 2001 with Coach Ryan Cuff and Fred Roberts, also with players like Sam Burgess, Chase Palmer, Jeff Mills, Matt Wilder, and the rest of the dominate Lone Peak Championship team. Coach Winn was also very successful at Snow College and then joined Coach Ingle at Timpanogas and Timpview. With all the experience in his pocket, being a head coach was not in the papers. Despite the little experience of being a head coach, Coach Winn stepped up and helped lead the team to the win. He also had help from assistant coach Jerimiah Hartsock who was a major part in the win. With Timpview missing their head coach and coming off the Springville loss, the players were hungry to win. The first quarter was a “dog fight” with both teams going back and forth. The first quarter ended at 18-18. But Timpview never panicked. They outscored the Skyhawks by ten in the second quarter, making the score 43-33 at the half. Timpview went into halftime with great stats like 12 assists and 16 rebounds, but they didn’t stop there. The third quarter was closer scoring-wise, but the T-Birds still kept the lead. With most of the starters in foul trouble, Coach Winn used the bench’s depth to his advantage. Senior Nate Davis and Sophomores Linclon Holcombe, Jackson Palmer, and Braxton Wilkerson stepped up when their number was called to help the T-Birds keep the moment. Halfway through the Fourth quarter, the T-birds started to run away with it. The energy was high and with the student section chanting for senior Austin Trail, the game was sealed for the win. Sophomore Dean Rueckurt led Timpview with an outstanding 29 points, followed by Mason Ford for 11. Despite the chaos behind the scenes, Timpview was able to pull off the win without Coach Ingle. As the players would say, “ Win with Coach Winn “, which they did against Salem Hills. Thank you to all who attended the game and good luck to Timpview at Maple Mountain on Friday.
