A much unexpected yet waited upon album from Tyler, The Creator, CHROMAKOPIA, dropped on October 28th. It has been a year since we got an album, The Estate Sale, from Tyler, The Creator. He has a list of impressive features: Lil Wayne, Sexyy Redd, GloRilla, Childish Gambino, Daniel Caesar, Teezo Touchdown, ScHoolboy Q, and Doechii. This is the artist’s seventh solo album and is definitely worth your listen.
Tyler has always been a good storyteller throughout his discography, but CHROMAKOPIA beats them all. In “Hey Jane,” where he tells the story about finding out he has gotten a woman pregnant and their decision to keep the child or not. In another example, “Judge Judy,” Tyler talks about a girl he was in love with only to find out she passed away. This newest album cuts a little deeper into his personal life, which not as many of his albums touch on, which I found really enjoyable.
My top three tracks:
- “Darling, I,” this quite easily takes the number one spot for me. With its charming and catchy beat and instrumentals combined with the feature from Teezo Touchdown, it makes the perfect track. Tyler has worked with Teezo before on the past album Call Me If You Get Lost, which makes them a duo we love to see.
- “Take Your Mask Off,” this to me has that classic Tyler, The Creator sound I love to hear. This really shows his rhyming ability but also storytelling along with the melodic beat that ties it all together.
- “I Hope You Find Your Way Home,” this to me is the most underrated track on the album. This is the perfect closer to the album you can just tell as soon as you press play. It ties the whole album together and ends it in a beautiful way.
Honorable mentions: “St. Chroma” is an amazing opener to an album and sets the tone for the rest of the album. “Rah Tah Tah” shows Tyler’s rapping abilities and is just a fun listen. “Hey Jane” shows his storytelling abilities which is unmatched on the whole album. Lastly, “Judge Judy” gives us a glimpse into his love life.
This is, in my opinion, a flawless album in the way that it has every version of Tyler, The Creator from his past albums and is the most complete.
Overall, CHROMAKOPIA is a 9.8/10.
