Spotify Wrapped dropped today, sending students across Timpview into a familiar mix of excitement and shame. And of course, everyone and their mother is posting about it on Instagram. The annual data breakdown highlights each listener’s most played songs, top genres and total minutes streamed, turning a year of private listening into a public snapshot of personality. For many students, wrapped is an opportunity to reflect on their past year.
“Spotify wrapped this year was good! It’s better than last year but not totally accurate.” Said Junior Sadie Watson. Senior Evealla Banya agreed, saying, “Yeah, I think it’s not completely accurate, I feel like I listened to some songs a billion times and they weren’t even on my top 5.” Evealla went on to list her top five artists: “ASAP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, Frank ocean, Childish Gambino and Cocteau Twins.” Her Spotify wrapped revealed over 21,000 minutes of listening. Senior Oliver Scribner described his “wrapped” this year as having a “good flow,” and that he got a few “niche artists” in his top 5…like ASAP Rocky. Hmm…Sure Oliver, VERY underground. Evealla and Oliver bonded over some of their shared artists. His top 5 artists were Tyler the creator, ASAP Rocky, Frank Ocean, Playboi Carti and Kendrick Lamar.

Along with the Spotify wrapped, there is also Apple Music’s version of the trend–the Replay. Replay highlights each user’s most-played artists, albums, and songs. Junior Summer Kaouk, an Apple Music user, said her Replay revealed a top-four lineup of Giveon, Addison Rae, The Marías and Suki Waterhouse, reflecting her mix of indie and pop favorites. Reya Hirst, a fellow Timpview junior, said the Hamilton soundtrack made a surprise appearance to her Replay. She knows what’s up!
As the wide range of music continues to spark conversation between students, one thing is clear–Spotify wrapped and Apple Replay are not just data, rather they are musical time capsule that students eagerly revisit each year.
