With the holidays rapidly approaching, it is time to get some Christmas cheer. You put up the tree, string the lights, and light the fire, but it doesn’t quite feel like Christmas without movies. You might be bored of watching the same movies over and over every year, so to help with this, I’ve compiled a list of five Christmas movies to put you in the spirit of the season.
#5 Edward Scissorhands

This movie, as the title implies, is about a man named Edward who has scissorhands. He is built by a scientist who dies before he is able to complete him, leaving him with scissors for hands. A woman brings him to live with her in the town of suburbia where Edward becomes an outcast to the townspeople. It may not sound Christmassy, but it takes place during the holiday season, and a main plot point is explaining how Edward created snow, so in my book, this definitely counts as a Christmas movie.
#4 Just Friends

This is the holiday rom-com, starring everyone’s favorite Canadian, Ryan Reynolds. It follows his character who gets rejected when he confesses his feelings for his high school best friend. Ten years later, he returns to his hometown as a successful executive and tries to win her back. It may not be the greatest thing ever created, but it’s a really fun time, and a great one to watch with a group of friends.
#3 Die Hard

This movie is a holiday classic, although it is fiercely debated if it counts as a Christmas movie. I think this is dumb because it takes place on Christmas Eve, so it counts. It follows cop John McClane who visits his wife’s office building on Christmas Eve. Terrorists then take the building over and he realizes he’s going to have to fight these terrorists on his own. It’s a great time and definitely a must-watch.
#2 It’s a Wonderful Life

This is a Christmas staple. It follows George Bailey who is contemplating suicide on Christmas because of all his problems. He is then visited by his guardian angel who shows him what the town would be like if he never existed. It’s a very sweet and well-done movie, perfect to watch this Christmas.
#1 Gremlins

This movie starts with a gadget salesman looking for a gift for his son. He ends up in Chinatown and gets his son a creature called a “mogwai,” but gives him three rules for it. It can’t be exposed to bright light, water, and you can’t feed it after midnight. Of course, these rules are all broken, and Gremlins are made which take over the town during Christmas. It’s funny, festive, and just a little spooky. It’s fun by yourself or with others and is the perfect Christmas movie for this year. Do yourself a favor and go watch it.
