Timpviews defense celebrates as Haven Halladay recovers a fumble.

The Timpview Thunderbirds are having a historic year as region, and potential state, champions.

This year Timpview has been on a roll during region play, capping off an undefeated regular season with a region championship. Timpview has a high-powered offense led by sophomore quarterback Helaman Casuga. He is joined by Senior stars Tei Nacua and Jaxon Farrar; And sophomore sensations Braxton Wilkerson and Kennan and Jaron Pula (The Pula Twins). Not to mention Timpview’s run game, led by Tru Toa and Aisa Galeai, which has been strong all year. Although you might think the Thunderbird’s success is credited to their high-powered offense, Timpview takes pride in their defense being the foundation for their success. As sports fans, we all know the term “Defense wins championships”. The Timpview Thunderbirds know and stand by that motto.

The Thunderbirds defense is full of next-level talent and takes pride in being the most energized group on the field. Timpveiw’s defense is strong up front with a talented and fast secondary behind. During the 2023 region play Timpview’s defense has only been scored on a handful of times. For example, they opened region play with a shutout against a high-powered Springville high school offense. We had a chance to interview some of the defensive players for Timpview and we were able to obtain information you don’t want to pass on.

We asked Taani Makasini, a 3-star ranked linebacker, how much effort and preparation it takes to play defense for Timpview football. “I think it takes 100% and more. I know that I spend almost my whole day thinking about plays and coverages and the jobs of everyone on the defense. You have to give everything every play or you are letting the team down.” Taani has made big plays for the Thunderbirds in crucial times. He is just one of the many players on their defense that step up and make plays. We also asked Jalen Namulauti, a pass rusher, what their defensive culture is. He replied enthusiastically by stating, “We play with a chip on our shoulders. Our culture has always been #ALLiN as we continue to do whatever it takes to win and bring that state championship home to Timpview High School.”

This week the Thunderbirds are set to take on Brighton High School in the third round of playoffs. If they win, they will continue their journey heading to Rice Eccles Stadium up in Salt Lake. We wish Timpview football the best of luck during this playoff run! As dedicated Timpview Thunderbird fans, we emphasize the importance of supporting all our athletes with respect and love, discouraging any form of online or in-person bullying or discrimination.
