T-Birds at Work: Nick Gerstner

T-Birds+at+Work%3A+Nick+Gerstner

Where do you work?

Pop n Dot

How long have you worked there?

1 1/2 years

How did you get started at your job?

My sister had worked there since it opened and the owners are my neighbors and good friends, so once I was old enough they let me work for them!

What do you do during a normal shift?

Stock (cups, lids, straws, limes, etc.), sticker cups, replace syrup and purée bottles, deep clean, clean the soda nozzles, replace the ice bins, sweep, make drinks/milkshakes/ice creams, talk with customers and coworkers

What do you like about your job?

All of my coworkers are super close to each other and I’ve gotten to be great friends with all of them! Also, interacting with customers helps you step outside your comfort zone and I’ve loved getting to know them and become close with the regulars.

How many hours/days a week do you spend at your job?

10-12 hours school year, 14-18 in the summer

How do you balance schoolwork, extracurriculars, and a job?

I have to plan out what I’m going to do in my day to keep track of everything. I’ll set aside a certain time to do schoolwork so that I do not have to cram it in late at night. I’ll plan out how much time I have to work on schoolwork that day and prioritize upcoming assignments. Sometimes if it’s slow at work, I work on school there. So just having a planned schedule in my head helps me stay on top of everything.

What is the craziest story you have about your job?

A guy came in one time and just asked for a cup of water. Super nice old guy, we chatted for a bit and then he left. Later my coworker and I saw 4 police cars pull into our parking lot. We found out that the guy was a sex offender who they had been searching for, for months.

Do you think your job will impact your life after high school? If so, how?

It’s given me a great opportunity to deal with a lot of different situations. I have customers who will come in and start yelling at me for something, and I have to be the one to stay calm and come up with a solution. It’s also helped me develop skills that I will be able to take with me throughout the rest of my life.

In your opinion, why should high schoolers have part-time jobs?

I most definitely think they should! It provides them with opportunities to step outside their comfort zone and develop skills that they will need in the future. It will prepare them for when they have a job in and after college and is a good foundation and place to start. Also, you’re making money, so why not?
