Timpview Cheer went to cheer nationals in California from February 15th through the 19th. The cheer team has been preparing for this big competition since August which was when they started working on their routines. The cheer team competed in 4 routines total at nationals. Jv and Varsity both competed their show routines on Friday and hit 0 placing them in the top 20% and advancing both teams to finals on Saturday. On Saturday Jv competed early in the morning hit and won nationals over the top 3 teams in the nation in that division! Varsity competed later that morning had several deductions and ended up getting 8th place out of 8 teams. Varsity was able to get the highest raw score out of all 8 teams which means if they would’ve hit they would have won nationals. This is good news for the team knowing that they can have a first place at nationals routine. The team’s goal was to just make it to day 2 which they over exceeded! Varsity competed in two other routines that day. They competed a cheer routine in which they yelled the well-known “ defense charge, charge” This division was a more confusing one where they typically scored all over the place and they ended up in 10th place. The last routine they competed in was their band chant. Which is a combination of dancing, being sharp, and cheer call-outs. In previous competitions in Utah, the cheer team has placed pretty poorly in this category. So they didnt know what to expect going into this routine. This routine also requires a lot of energy they competed at 10 pm after a long day. Before they competed the routine the cheer coaches told the girls they could rally out doing whatever they wanted. A typical rally out would be waving your poms, a kick, a jump or just smiling. The girls ran out doing the girddy, karate kicks, spins, star jumps, and a different assortment of weird things. The girl’s energy was higher than ever as they were laughing a lot and delusional from the long day. Right after their routine all of the judges were talking about Timpview Cheer and their routine saying “Now that’s how you do a band chant” The judges loved the energy and enthusiasm represented in the routine. The cheer team ended up taking 2nd place out of almost 30 teams. And they were only .1 away from getting 1st place and taking home national champs in their band chant routine. This second-place trophy left the girls feeling accomplished and optimistic for next year. Although things didnt go as expected in all routines, the cheer team feels like they were able to learn a ton from nationals and they feel they can keep their legacy going.
