When people think of famous movie locations, a couple places come to mind: Hollywood, Beverly Hills, maybe even places in Europe. Utah probably doesn’t come to mind, yet many mainstream movies have been filmed there. Let’s take a look at some of the most recognizable ones.

High School Musical was released in 2006 and starred Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. The movie is timeless and people still know the lyrics of songs and quotations from the film. This is no surprise as girls from all over fell for teenage Zac Efron. The film was shot mainly at East High School (840 1300 E, Salt Lake City), Murray High School (5440 S State Street, Salt Lake City), and numerous locations in St. George.

Footloose came out in 1984 and starred Kevin Bacon. The film was set all around Utah including the Lehi Roller Mills (833 East Main Street, Lehi) and Payson High School (1050 S Main St, Payson).

Dumb and Dumber was another popular movie partially made in Utah. Released in 1994, and starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. The apartment where they lived in the beginning of the film is located in Salt Lake City (228 South 300 East). Part of it was shot in Park City, and believe it or not many of the indoor scenes were shot at the once Osmond studios in Orem.

The Sandlot was another excellent film that was surprisingly filmed in Utah. The film has been loved by fans of all ages since 1993. The drug store where Squints purchases a baseball is still standing today, but not open for business. The address is 7696 North Main Street in Midvale. The baseball field is also accessible. Well…sort of. Some friends and I recently went scouting for the field in Salt Lake and it was rough. Homes are built around the entirety of the field except for one little gap. The owner of the property has several cameras, and owns a dog that loves snitching. If you’d like to try your luck the address is 1388 Glenrose Drive, Salt Lake City. The fence is quite poky, so be careful.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, to no surprise, was primarily filmed in Utah. There are no specific addresses because the film was shot all over southern Utah. Robert Redfod starred in the 1969 Western and in 1968 he bought the Timp Haven Ski Resort, which was later named to Sundance Ski Resort after his role in the movie.
